Garden fountains

Resistant over time, they can be of different materials and both in stone and bronze or granite, give the garden an aristocratic or other time appearance. Everything depends on your taste and the other furnishings that the area presents. The manufacturers of outdoor fountains are really giving their best both in terms of quality and aesthetics. On the latter then, you can really indulge your inspiration as you will find elements that you didn't even imagine. There are even little fountains that damage the idea of a well even if in fact, they do not have that dangerousness and are structured in such a way as to appear as furnishings that are not modern but of ancient construction. Today garden fountains not only have the purpose of embellishing but also that of being functional at most carrying out functions for each type. There are granite fountains that also have an additional element capable of containing a climbing plant that, over time, climbs along the entire structure of the fountain, creating a rustic and characteristic combination of granite and leaves.

Which type of garden fountain to choose

As we have seen, there is a wide range of garden fountains. If you want the maximum of their functionality, you must first decide where to place the fountain. If you only need it for beauty and to decorate the external environment, we say that any place is fine except that there are the conditions to be able to assemble it. If you want to use it for daily use because you need it to clean tools, to wash various cookware because you love garden dinners and you want to make the most of it, you should take one of those large, practical fountains, resistant to shocks and chipping. You can place it near the gazebo where you organize dinners with friends in a fairly comfortable and close place so that you can move around comfortably without going back and forth, choose one of those fountains with relative support, perhaps not beautiful in their kind but without shadow of a doubt, very practical and manageable. Try to have a faucet mounted that does not spoil with atmospheric agents, that does not deteriorate with use and with the inexorable wear and tear of time. If you like the typical bronze wall fountain, opt for those with a flat back that is applied to the boundary walls of the courtyard or garden with solid bolts. They are fountains without stems, very pretty and features that usually bear a lion's face on the façade from whose mouth a faucet with a matt or bronze color comes out. They too are functional without being of large dimensions and even if you can't support some kind of large objects, even this type of fountain, can be used with tranquility. If instead you want to do things in style and the fountain serves you exclusively for ornamental use, you can have a continuous fountain set up that is beautiful just like the ones you see in the town's public houses. They are usually of white granite and are formed of three or more tanks that decrease in size as you go up. Their gush is constant and in order not to exaggerate with water consumption, you can have a continuous loop installed. Of course, as often happens, it may happen that you want a unique and very original piece that may not be found on sales catalogs. In this case you have to turn to the world of craftsmanship and even if surely there is a surcharge on the item purchased, you will available a unique and original piece.

How to mount a garden fountain

Once you have chosen the place to place your fountain, you need to see if there are the right prerogatives to be able to get the water up to it and make it functional. Take the case of a granite fountain with a stem. This, in the rear part of the shank, is equipped with a hole where a polyethylene pipe will pass which will be connected to the tap and to the main water pipe. You can also supply the fountain with a steel tube instead of a polyethylene one, only that the right sizes are difficult to find and both cutting and threading are difficult. If you do this yourself, contact plumbing stores who will be able to give you more detailed information on the parts to be used. As for the drain, on the other hand, you can make a wooden box without a bottom in the basement with about 40 centimeters of pebbles or you can create a basement with a classic cement pit open on both sides with a bottom made of gravel and stones. It is necessary to drain the water even if the fountain is used only to rinse some work tools or wash your hands because with the use, a softening of the ground can occur. If you use the fountain for the same use as the domestic type, wash the pots or rinse the vegetables, it is advisable to connect the drain to the main sewer because the fountain has a different functionality from those that are used less frequently.

How to do maintenance on garden fountains

The classic garden fountains, as we have seen, are resistant and of excellent material. They hardly deteriorate due to atmospheric agents. However, even the fountains need minimal maintenance so that they can always look like new. For obvious reasons, outdoor fountains are used much more often in summer than in winter. From time to time in the winter season, check the fountains that may have been covered in the sink, by leaves and debris carried by the wind. These can penetrate inside the water drain hole and then plug the pipe. Remove leaves and debris and possibly close the hole. Unless these decorative fountains are found in the middle of the courtyard formed by several superimposed elements that gush, the fountains do not give excessive problems. In the latter case, however, they must be cleaned thoroughly after having emptied them. Once without water, with a broom on which you have wrapped a rag soaked in an anti-limestone substance. Often, on those granite structures, unsightly encrustations of calcareous elements contained in the water can be formed. After passing the rag soaked in liquid, let it work for half an hour and rinse with the current jet of a garden pump. If then you have to refill the fountain with continuous circuit water, do it too but add a dose of chlorine or special substances that prevent the formation of limestone and unsightly greenish stripes. Do the same operation also on the external walls of the fountain because there may also form incrustations. Cast iron fountains are usually resistant to all weather conditions but it is a good habit to repaint them if not annually but at least every three years because the color, however it may be undamaged to weathering, fades and becomes dull. If the cast iron fountain has accidentally been scratched, do not leave it like this, but without painting it, pass on the deteriorated parts a special enamel that you can find in specialized hardware
