Fertilizers for plants
All plants, whether composed of only leaves and flowers, cultivated in the garden, in flower beds or in apartments, physiologically require a good growth, reproduction and development of fertilizers. These are basically the essence on which the whole plant world is based. Without them no plant or plant form, spontaneous or cultivated, would survive. One of the things that most confuses those who grow plants is precisely the choice of fertilizers that can be found under different formulas and products. Often we happen to cultivate a plant without carefully carrying out the fertilization with the result that does not grow adequately according to the morphological characteristics, and forces us to spend a lot of money to cure it and then when it is too late we die in our hands nullifying all our efforts facts. Garden centers sometimes even sell their product and recommend the one that is suitable for any type of plant even if it does not contain specific substances suitable for our plant, with the result that it slowly withers completely. If instead we adequately document ourselves we can avoid mistakes and the art of gardening can be our pride. There are different types of fertilizers on the market: soluble, granular, slow release, organic, inorganic, special, foliar, etc. We focus on the most common and in particular on three categories, namely chemical, organic and inorganic categories.
FERTILIZERS PLANTS: CHEMICALS
Nitrogen encourages plants to produce dark green leaves. When in a plant the yellowing of the leaves is noticed it means that it is not sufficiently nourished of nitrogen in the ground. However, it should be noted that nitrogen overdose generates only plants that are uncultivated or have no fruit. It is rapidly absorbed from the soil and therefore requires frequent administration. Nitrogen can be applied in two forms: that of nitrate (inorganic) which is usually fast-acting, but can filter quickly in surface and underground waters; that of ammonium (organic) released instead more slowly and therefore lasts longer in the soil limiting the frequency of administration. The second vital chemical element that is required by many plants is phosphorus. It stimulates root growth in a healthy and vigorous way, especially in tubers and bulbs. Phosphorus does not move easily through the soil and must therefore be applied manually near the plant roots. Potassium is also essential for the health of all plants, especially during the second half of the life cycle in the fruit and vegetable sector, when flowers and fruits begin to sprout in plants. It is available as chloride and should be administered soluble in water. Also the potassium like the phosphorus must be positioned manually near the roots for the scarce fluidity that distinguishes it.
FERTILIZERS PLANTS: ORGANIC
The organic products contain stimulants for the plants and give force to the biological activity in the soil. They are very suitable for the cultivation of meadows in bloom and can be considered of general use. The best organic fertilizers are of animal origin like that of the cow (dry), its slow release makes it valuable for conditioning the soil and is good for all types of gardens; of the horse (slow release once dry) that must be given composted because if fresh it can burn the plants and it is also recommended for all types of garden. Poultry (dry) is rich in nitrogen and phosphorus and is suitable for bulbs, pruned plants and flowering and fruit trees. Finally, a separate mention of organic products deserves ash wood. Although it contains nutrients (potassium and calcium), it increases the pH of the soil and can damage the microorganisms present in the soil so it is better to avoid it!
Fertilizers for plants: FERTILIZERS PLANTS: INORGANIC
Most inorganic products are available from nurseries and garden centers. Most are acidifying, soluble in water with a good amount of nitrogen and suitable for crops that prefer soil acidity conditions such as azaleas, camellias, blueberries, citrus fruits, myrtle, holly, ferns, magnolias and rhododendrons. Among these products the most important are: nitrogen-rich ammonium nitrate often used on lawns for rapid growth and yellowing leaves. It is a well-balanced substance suitable also for plants that need it such as trees, shrubs, flower beds, fruit trees, lawns, perennials, potted plants, etc. On the other hand, iron is suitable for plants that are deficient or have yellowed leaves, sometimes due to an uncompacted or poorly drained soil; It is also indicated for administration to valuable plants such as gardenias, camellias and trees such as boxwood, oak and pine. Finally, phosphorus is used to promote flowering and fruiting. It is ideal for many plants grown in pots, for many types of flowers, perennials and to give vigor to the roots of bulbs such as onions, tulips and potatoes.
