Among the orchids represented by modern floriculture, there are many species suitable for indoor cultivation.

These plants are unpretentious, and caring for them is straightforward. However, for a bright and long-lasting flowering, it is important to know the rules of competent feeding. You will learn more about this in this article.

How to feed correctly?

It is best to feed home orchids with specially formulated complex fertilizers. it is for this type of indoor plants. The main trace elements contained in them - nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus, contribute to both vegetative growth and bright flowering of phalaenopsis, and macronutrients help to avoid substrate salinity.

Important! Conventional houseplant fertilizers cannot be used to feed orchids. The beneficial substances that make up their composition have a higher concentration.

What chemicals are needed for growing?

The most important for growing orchids are nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.

  • Nitrogen responsible for vegetative growth.
  • Phosphorus and potassium contribute to the development of the root system and the setting of flower stalks, and also increase the plant's resistance to diseases and its drought resistance.

The combination of these chemicals in the orchid feed mix is abbreviated as NPK. Depending on the quantitative superiority of one or another element of fertilizer for orchids, there are:

  • balanced (NPK = 20: 20: 20) - for the cultivation of orchids planted in a substrate of inorganic origin, as well as in a soil mixture from the bark of cork oak and coniferous trees;
  • with a high nitrogen content (NPK = 30: 10: 10) - to build up green mass;
  • high in phosphorus (NPK = 10: 30: 20) - to stimulate flowering.

For full growth, bright and long-lasting flowering Phalaenopsis also need trace elements such as boron, magnesium and calcium.

List of effective mineral mixtures and their composition

The most effective and safe for feeding indoor orchids are specially developed means:

  1. "Agrecol" - easy to dose and highly soluble in water. Provides good growth, improves the appearance and gives the flowers a vibrant color.
  2. "Dr. Foley" - a preparation for foliar feeding. Convenient to use. Contains essential trace elements, vitamins and acids.
  3. "Brexil Combi" - is a cocktail of trace elements, vitamins, nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. It is used for the care of plants suffering from iron deficiency in the form of foliar feeding.

Among the concentrated fertilizers intended for all indoor plants, the best for fertilizing phalaenopsis are such drugs as:

  • "Garden of Miracles".
  • "Ideal".
  • "Oasis".
  • "Rainbow".

They are used for both root and external feeding of orchids.

Attention! When using concentrated preparations, it is recommended to use a dose reduced 10 times from that indicated on the package.

DIY organic solutions

Experienced growers, who know how to accurately calculate the fertilizer concentration, feed the orchids with organic solutions. They are prepared from improvised means:

  • banana peel;
  • black tea;
  • boiled potatoes;
  • onion broth;
  • fern root;
  • aloe;
  • and sugar syrup.

Such nutrient solutions containing live microorganisms are prepared each time before use and diluted to the desired concentration with warm, settled water. Top dressing is applied only to the wet root systemto avoid possible root burns.

At the first application of organic feeding, it is advisable to try it on only one plant (half a leaf), so as not to destroy the entire collection of orchids.

Types of feeding

Orchid feeding is carried out both root and foliar.

Root dressing is applied to healthy adult plants in order to saturate them with nutrients, as well as to stimulate growth and flowering.

  1. Fertilization is preceded by high-quality watering of the flower until the roots are completely moistened.
  2. The drug is diluted in clean, settled water at room temperature in accordance with the recommendations of the instructions.
  3. A flower pot with a plant is lowered into a container filled with a nutrient composition and kept for 15-20 minutes.
  4. Then rearrange the flowerpot on a pallet to remove excess liquid.

To build up green mass and root growth, use the drug "Mister-Color Universal" (1 cap of the substance per 3 liters of water). For setting flower stalks and during the flowering period - "Mister-color orchid" (1 cap per 1 liter of water).

In the case of foliar feeding, the nutrient solution is applied to the orchid leaves by spraying. External fertilization has a number of advantages:

  • does not require long-term preliminary preparation of the plant;
  • acts faster;
  • supplies more micronutrients;
  • can be applied to plants with chlorosis and damaged root systems.

Important! It is not recommended to carry out foliar dressing in a draft, in a cold room and under the influence of direct sunlight. Avoid getting the solution on buds and flowers.

When and how to fertilize?

The fertilization scheme and the choice of the drug depend on the stage of development of the plant and what its condition is. Anyway top dressing by applying diluted fertilizer directly to the substrate is carried out only on soaked roots, to avoid their burns.

Do I need it after purchase?

Freshly acquired blooming orchids do not need feeding. Fertilization at this stage causes the rapid withering away of both blossoming flowers and formed buds.

A period of active growth

During the period of active growth, indoor orchids are fed with special complex fertilizers, containing an increased amount of nitrogen. This element contributes to the rapid growth of the green mass of the flower. Top dressing is carried out 1 time in 2 weeks.

When using fertilizers for other flowering indoor plants, the concentration of the drug is reduced by 2 times relative to the recommended one.

Can flowers be stimulated?

Orchid flowering is stimulated by feeding the plant with succinic acid, cetokinin paste or a special fertilizer with a high phosphorus content and a low nitrogen content. Top dressing is carried out both by root and foliar method 1 time a week at every second watering.

The main condition for such stimulation is the presence of growing peduncles. After the appearance of the first flower, fertilizer is applied no more than 1 time per month.

Important! The above method is only applicable to strong, healthy plants.

Frequency before and during flowering

Before flowering, the orchid needs a lot of phosphorus and potassium. for setting buds, abundant and long flowering. The drugs that stimulate the onset of flowering include:

  • "Agrecol for Orchids" - 7 ml per 3 liters of water.
  • "Clean sheet for orchids" - 1 cap for 2 liters of water.
  • "Orchid flower paradise" - 10 ml per 1 liter of water.
  • "Bona forte (orchid)" - 5 ml for 1.5 liters of water.

The nutrient mixture is applied once a week from the moment the peduncle appears until the first bud opens. During the mass flowering of orchids, the introduction of fertilizing is either canceled or the concentration of solutions is reduced by 3 times from the recommended one.

The introduction of nutrients at this stage speeds up the process of opening the buds, which leads to the rapid completion of flowering. In addition, due to a decrease in activity, the roots hardly absorb the substances coming to them. This could cause them to burn.

The exception is orchids with a long flowering period (several months). They are fertilized once a week, reducing the concentration twice.

After the buds wither

The withering of the buds without the formation of new ovaries signals that the plant is preparing to enter a dormant period. It is recommended to apply a complex fertilizer within 14 days after the end of floweringfree of high concentrations of phosphorus and potassium.

For example, "Master for Orchids" liquid concentrate at the rate of 5 ml per 1.5 liters of water, or "Kemira lux" - 0.5 tsp. for 5 liters of water. In the future, watering and feeding is reduced and resumed no earlier than a month later.

After transplant

A planned transplant of orchids with a complete replacement of the substrate is carried out 1 time in 2-3 years. To alleviate the stressful period, additional drugs are introduced that stimulate cell growth and regeneration - "Epin", "Kornevin".

The first full dressing after transplanting is recommended no earlier than a month later. They use complex preparations designed exclusively for orchids, for example, Kemira Lux or Bona Forte. They begin to be used during the formation of new leaves.

Step-by-step instruction

The sequence of root feeding:

  1. Before fertilizing, the roots of the plant are completely moistened.
  2. Fertilizer is diluted in settled water at room temperature to the desired concentration.
  3. A flowerpot with a flower is placed in a container filled with water with top dressing for 15-20 minutes.
  4. The roots are watered with a solution from above until water begins to pour through the bottom of the pot.
  5. The pot is placed on a tray to remove excess liquid.
  6. The flower is kept at room temperature.

Correctly carried out feeding in compliance with the norms and ratios of nutrients contributes to the lush and long-lasting flowering of orchids. Mistakes in the choice of fertilizers and their application will significantly reduce the flowering period.
